This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a science teacher I feel it is my responsibility to encourage and engage young minds in the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). The challenge we face is having activities that allow them to "do" science not just be told what it is.
Too often when freshmen come to my class, many of them bring the mindset that they either don't like science or aren't any good at it.
I have never encountered a lab that is more engaging and effective at changing that mindset. They see the glowing bacteria that they engineered but I see students whose curiosity in science is sparked and confidence in their abilities increased dramatically.
Being a Title I school, our students come from all different backgrounds financially and demographically. We can only hope that our students come from a home that places emphasis on the value of education. More often than not it is up to the teacher to inspire a love of learning in our students. This lab is an incredible opportunity to ignite this curiosity and fascination with science. This is a lab they will never forget and will hopefully make young scientists out of them all!
My Project
My students need bacterial transformation kits and DNA kits to carry out a biotechnology lab to create glowing bacteria. The transformation kit contains the genetically engineered plasmid with the GFP gene that was derived from a bioluminescent jellyfish. The kit also comes with sterile professional grade materials needed to carry out a successful transformation. This is the same gene you see in the news that research scientists have used to make pigs, mice and other organisms.
This lab employs technology that is currently used to do things like create medicines, understand genetic diseases, environmental solutions, and look for cures for many diseases including cancers. Who knows, the student you inspire today could save your life or someone you love in the future!
With the educational funding crisis in Texas we will not be able to offer this lab for students in the upcoming school year.
Please consider helping with this project to keep young minds inspired!
