My students need 8 kits to practice DNA Fingerprinting to support curriculum changes in the North Carolina Essential Standards.

My Students
Biotechnology is a newer field of Biology. One that fascinates many, but confuses others. Students must know the procedure and technique used to complete gel electrophoresis for their End of Course test.
I teach a variety of students from many different backgrounds.
One thing remains the same for all of my students - they benefit greatly from hands-on activities, not just what they read in the book. I teach at a rural school with about 1,100 students and a diverse population. In my classroom there is a mixture of grade levels. I teach 10th graders mostly.
My Project
I have requested kits so my students can practice DNA Fingerprinting to support curriculum changes in the North Carolina Essential Standards. My students will be able to complete a DNA Fingerprint to solve a simulated crime. Students will practice the technique and interpret the data.
My hope is that this may encourage students to think about the field of Biotechnology and the positive influence it has in our world. Students will be able to incorporate what they learned in class and put it into a laboratory setting. This may encourage many students to think about a job in the field of Biotechnology.
Our curriculum for Biology in North Carolina is changing this year, and there is a larger emphasis on Biotechnology.
It is not enough for students to just know what DNA fingerprinting is, but they must know the actual procedure and meaning of the banding pattern that appears.
