Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 5th graders in an urban school. They are now entering their sixth year in a dual-immersion language program, through which they are attaining proficiency in two languages, English and Spanish.

My students are determined to overcome any obstacles they face in life.

The school neighborhood is in an area of high poverty, and 90% of the students in this class entered school with a primary language background other than English. However, my students will not let their circumstances label them as disadvantaged learners. They continue to make the best of the opportunities they are presented. As a result, they will finish their elementary school career with a strong academic background in not just one, but two languages!

My Project

My fifth grade students will be studying heredity, adaptations, and variation this spring. As part of our studies, they will investigate how structure affects function in bird wing as well as in plant seed dispersal.

During this unit of investigation, students will follow an iterative engineering design process in which they design a toy to meet specific criteria and then create a prototype of their toy using balsa wood, styrofoam, and foam sheets.

The engineering design challenges in this unit could include designing a glider that flies the farthest distance, designing a boomerang that returns to a starting point, or designing a whirligig that hovers and spins slowly to the ground. Students will test their prototypes and refine their projects by incorporating what they learned about how structure affects function.
