Help me give my students an investigation tool that allows them to pretend they are biomedical engineers trying to design an antiviral for a new virus.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Mann's classroom raised $693

My Students
The students in my room are a unique group of learners. They have been a cohort for 4 years and are now in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. They have matured to become an extremely hardworking, close, and nurturing cohort of students. Even though they have multiple challenges they are always willing to help others.
The students in my self-contained special needs classroom face many challenges.
The majority of them are English Language Learners (ELL) with mild to moderate cognitive learning abilities, and autism. They range in level from pre-K to first and second grade in reading and math. Several students have medical issues and gross motor challenges. They all have difficulty with handwriting. They are consistently in need of additional learning tools and experiences to stimulate and help them reach their potential.
Our school and neighborhood are comprised of families that are low-income and speak a combined 50+ languages. We are a community of loving families, teachers, and administrators, that are committed to fully funded classrooms for our students. We fundraise and give whatever we can to create a positive and stimulating learning environment but sometimes our resources are limited. Please lend your support.
My Project
This project will serve all students that apply in the middle school, regular education and the special needs population. Students will become biomedical engineers as they explore how to prepare for outbreaks of highly contagious diseases. They will use the Engineering Design Process to design an antiviral to stop a newly discovered virus from infecting a model cell.
A group of motivated and interested students will meet after school for one hour and 15 minutes a week until the project is completed.
We will take every opportunity to explore, research and design the project according to the instructions but add on opportunities for discovery along the way whenever possible.
The culminated project will be presented to the upper-grade students as a presentation and Q and A session afterward.
The goal is to offer our middle school students additional hands-on science opportunities outside of the regular classroom setting with like-minded inquiring minds. This science investigation will involve critical thinking and scientific investigation with a collaborative approach. As part of the culminating activities, the students will present their project findings to their middle school peers followed by a Q and A session.
