Biology Class Comes Alive!

My students need hands-on ecological science supplies with living organisms, a soil test kit and a terrarium system to see the process of biology at work!

My Students

Outdated lab tables, nonworking science facilities, and worksheet after worksheet have been "teaching" my students science for far too long! They haven't been properly exposed to the wonder that is nature, its complexities, and its beauty.

My ninth grade students hail from neighborhoods where there are no trees, only pavement, and brick building after brick building.

As a child I was blessed to find a large park full of trees and even a creek right across the street from my home, enabling me to explore what life I could find there. My students have no such luxury, but only malformed ideas about science. However, they have bright eyes and wonder strewn across their faces when given the opportunity to actually interact with science! They love kinesthetic activities and working with their hands, and they love being exposed to novel things. They are excitable when it comes to such novelty, and I want to excite them about the science we are learning. They attend a public school with few resources to spare on bringing science to life for them, and so my students are elated when they get the chance even to see science in action.

My Project

I have requested materials that my students will be able to use in our ecology unit. We are exploring the interactions and interdependence of all living things, and the materials I have requested do a great job of highlighting that. I have requested drosophila flies, so students can observe the rise and subsequent fall in a population as resources dwindle. I have also asked for a soil test kit, which will allow students to realize that soil is more than just dirt, and contains nutrients vital to the survival of all life. I've requested a bog terrarium set, which will cause students to be fascinated as they watch a Venus fly trap and pitcher plant in action, relieving our room of flies. I've also ordered a butterfly rearing system, which will allow students themselves to take part in the process of creating life and watching it flourish.

The title of my project is Biology Class Comes Alive.

It is an ironic, but telling title. My students are ready and willing to learn, and they deserve it. They only need the support and stimulus of being able to play. When my students realize that there is substance to science, something that they can put their hands on, that is when they take the most away from it. I want them to associate science with joyful, fun experiences, rather than work. Your donations will help tremendously. Thank you.
