Biology 101 in the Alaska Bush

My students need a microscope, sample slides, and some beakers in order to do some lab work for their science class.

My Students

My students live in a rural fishing village in Alaska. They are Yup'ik natives (the largest native tribe in Alaska) and their families survive on subsistence living--hunting and gathering. The culture of fishing changes with the seasons, from salmon to trout to herring to smelts.

Like most villages in Alaska, there is a high rate of alcohol and substance abuse.

Suicide attempts are common. The literacy rate is low and most kindergarten students begin school 2 years behind the norm in terms of their readiness for school. The drop-out rate is high.

My Project

This lab equipment will help my students conduct experiments in their Biology 101 class. My students are in an alternative program, which allows them to do credit recovery at their own pace and proceed to graduation. Too often, science class is simply a class where students are required to memorize a bunch of new words and terminology. By using a microscope, students will discover an exciting new word in miniature.

The sample slides offer a variety of plants, animals, and inanimate samples to review through the microscope.

This will help them to discover the reality behind some of the scientific theories they are exploring.
