My students need a selection biographies to improve literacy, to inspire them, and to have exposure to prominent figures in history like Jackie Robinson and Anne Frank.

My Students
My classroom is a resource room for gifted students. Students attend my classroom to receive enrichment activities. Throughout the year, self-directed learning is used where students complete independent research projects on different topics of interest to them.
Our school is in a very rural, farming community with high poverty rates.
Half of the student body speaks English as a second language as they are children of migrant workers. All my students have been identified as intellectually gifted having an IQ of 120 or higher. They crave knowledge especially information about history and historical figures. They are self-motivated and absorb information quickly. Since this is the case, I must be prepared with additional information that interests them like these nonfiction selections.
My Project
During our self-directed learning/independent research projects, students can choose to read and compile information from the biographies provided in this grant. By using the biographies, students are learning history and becoming more fluent readers.
Gifted learners often have trouble accepting their mistakes.
They strive to be the best the first time, and if something becomes difficult, they often quit. By reading the biographies which show the challenges and struggles faced, I feel they will began to understand that mistakes are important for success. Mistakes help us make improvements, help us become more determined, and help us appreciate what we have accomplished. I hope my class realizes that the only true failure is quitting.
