My Students
Abraham Lincoln once said, "In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years." I want to give my students a chance to study this great man and the role he played in our nation's history.
I teach 20 precious third graders in small town Arkansas.
My school educates over 350 students PreK - 4th grade. My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures. They are very interested in non-fiction texts such as National Geographic magazines and biographies. They are energetic and love learning about new people and places.
My Project
My students need sets of biographies. The class set of the Abraham Lincoln biographies will be read and studied as a class. This will give my students a chance to really dig deep into this period in American History. They will learn about the Civil War and this great president. Students will then break up into groups to read the biographies of Harriet Tubman and Martin Luther King Jr. I have planned this unit to be taught during Black History Month, so not only will students be able to connect the supporting books to Abraham Lincoln, but they will also be gaining an insight to the struggles African Americans faced during a dark period in American History.
This unit meets requirements set forth by the Common Core State Standards in Literacy and the Arkansas Frameworks in Social Studies.
More than that, students will acquire an in depth knowledge of American History that will help them understand social issues they face even in today's society.
More than half of students from low‑income households
