We read ALL KINDS OF BOOKS! Reading for information is an important skill in adulthood and needs to be taught early. Having Biography and Non-Fiction texts at a variety of reading levels will give my class access to this important skill and plenty of practice.
Our students are dynamic, motivated, and love to learn.
The challenge is that we are located in a very high-needs are of the city--high poverty, many language learners, and a variety of social-emotional and academic special needs. While many schools are able to fundraise through parent and community organizations, we are trying to provide the same resources without that option. We have highly-skilled, trained, and loving teachers who are doing the best they can to provide our students the education they deserve and need to succeed in the 21st century.
My Project
As an adult, I imagine you occasionally read non-fiction books. You probably learn some fascinating information about people, places, and times in history. This is a skill that empowers and enlarges our quality of life, and it is necessary to teach that skill to our young readers.
I have requested 2 leveled sets of Biographies and a leveled set of a variety of Non-Fiction books to support my readers as I provide them with the skills and strategies they need to understand and think critically about the information they are reading. This is invaluable, as I have a wide range of reading levels in my third grade classroom (from kindergarten/emergent to middle school/advanced levels). I want my teaching to segue into inspiring and engaging texts.
Your donation will support these units of study and my readers as they gain a very necessary life skill that will support them in their coming years of education and professional/personal lives.
Public education, in essence, was designed to give ALL students the tools they need to achieve and succeed.
My students in this neighborhood NEED access to leveled non-fiction and biography texts in order to navigate their educational and professional futures.
