Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many students are turned off by science because they're intimidated by the content, and they have a difficult time relating it to their lives. My goal is to create an open and inviting environment where all students feel like they can be scientists.
My students are from the South Bronx.
Due to the issues my students face on an everyday basis, many of my students have an interest in fields that serve others. Because of this, I've created an Investigative Biology course, which allows students to dive into the role of scientists and medical professionals. This allows students to use science to fuel their interest in social and biological issues that directly affect their lives.
My Project
My students need exposure to real scientific equipment and guidance from professional scientists.
BioBus is a 501(c)3 nonprofit with a mission to help minority, female, and low-income K - 12 and college students in New York City discover, explore, and pursue science.
They have two mobile science labs that visit schools throughout the metropolitan area. The full cost of a BioBus visit is $3,100, which includes salaries for two scientist-teachers and a bus driver, lab supplies, and vehicle maintenance. With the support of generous donors, BioBus is able to give schools significant discounts based on their reported economic need index. Based on the economic need index of the Community School for Social Justice, they can offer a BioBus visit for $415.50 - an 87% discount off our usual rate. The BioBus visit will provide up to 6 classes (30 students per class) the chance to use our state-of-the-art microscope lab of discovery guided by two professional scientists.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
