Have you ever heard of a NEST classroom before? The goal of the ASD Nest Support Project is to advance the development and implementation of educational solutions for children living with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The ASD Nest Model is designed for students with Autism, who are able to do grade-level academic work. We create a fully inclusive therapeutic environment that uses positive behavior support, targeted instructional strategies and specialized social interventions to make inclusion work.
The Nest program provides a safe, inclusive environment where students are valued as individuals and learn alongside their general education peers, while developing foundational skills for continued success in school.
Our second graders are working hard, not only on academics, but also navigating the social world. We choose to celebrate their strengths and use those strengths along with their interests to motivate them to work to their fullest potential. Our class prides itself on being a community of learners who aren't afraid to take risks, who support one another, and who are working on being life-long learners!
My Project
During these crazy Covid times, our in-person students are in need of clear bins in which they can store all their personal belongings throughout the day. The days of unpacking and hanging items up in the closet are gone, as the children need to stay at their desks most of the time. Currently, the students put their backpacks and coats on the back of their chairs. The items are constantly falling on the floor and pose a tripping threat.
The bins would enable us to provide a safe, clutter-free classroom for our children.
In addition, we are also requesting 2 rolling stools. As the children are now arranged in 6-feet-apart rows, my co-teacher and I are in need of rolling stools so we can support each student and move on to the next quickly and without breaking our backs!
