Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is located in inner-city Houston, Texas in a low socioeconomic neighborhood that is a true definition of a Title I school. Many students face difficult challenges that I cannot imagine having to deal with. Many deal with taking care of their younger siblings daily and some even have to pick up a job so they can help their family financially.
On top of this, we teachers require them to complete homework, attend school every day, and be energetic and excited about learning.
This is a difficult task when they have so many other things they have to worry about in their lives.
My Project
My students use a binder system to keep track of all their work that is done in our class. This organization helps them to have each class separated by color and with their name on their binder. The bookshelves are the holding places in class for their binders so that none of their work is lost, damaged, or stolen during their learning throughout the school year. This helps to keep their notes and assignments organized properly.
For my students to be able to walk in on the first day of school to a shelf full of brand new binders would inspire them to take ownership, especially when the bookshelves can help in this process It's rare that some of these students ever get anything brand new.
This will be one less school supply they will have to go home and tell mom to buy. Everyone will start out on the same page. All of their classwork will be located in this binder. At the end of the class, the students return their binder to the shelf, keeping it at school at all times.
