I teach at a Math & Science Academy in a low income area of a large urban area in Illinois. As Science Specialist I coordinate the science lessons for the entire school, and teach the students in the science lab. Our students have learned that science is fun and exciting, and look forward to our lab sessions. They have learned that what they work to put into their heads, no one can steal or destroy.

One of the topics the 4th grade students cover is environmental education and recycling, and habitats. On a recent field trip the students saw an earthworm composting box and became very excited about the possibility of having these wonderful creatures in our school. The worms would cut down on the garbage in the lunchroom, provide rich soil for the other grades that grow plants in their science units, and promote awareness of the interconnectedness of all living things. Worms will not be something to jump on after a rain storm (when they come out of the ground onto the sidewalk) but recognized as a vital link in the cycle of living things. Having a vermiculture project would tie the school curriculum together.

With a starter kit that provides directions and information on worm composting, and 50 earthworms to get us going, our students will grow in their understanding of how the environment is interconnected and how all living things rely on each other.

Your generous donation will provide these city slickers with the opportunity to learn good things about slimy worms, and to open their eyes to their responsibility to the environment. Thanks for your help.
