it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is located in Washington state at a Title I school. Students at my school are hardworking, kind, eager individuals. Many students are first and second generation citizens from Africa, South America, and Asia. About 42% of students qualify for English Language Learner Services but up to 50% of students speak a language other than English in the home. Our differing cultures, backgrounds, economic statuses, and languages provide richness in the classroom, but we also face challenges. One challenge is that we are incredibly underfunded. At HV, 83% of students qualify for free and reduced school lunch.
There are so many experiences and learning opportunities I wish I could have with our students if only I had the means.
My Project
Many students enter schools with the wonderful asset of knowing a language other than English. At my school, this other language is often Spanish. However, at my school, these students are only met with instruction supporting their development in English. I want to encourage literacy in both English and Spanish in my classroom. I would love your help in doing so by bringing in bilingual (Spanish/English) books into the classroom for the students to read. Such books include: How Do you Say?/¿Cómo Se Dice?, I Like It When . . . /Me gusta cuando . . . , Only One You/Nadie Como Tú , Perro grande... Perro pequeño / Big Dog... Little Dog , as well as many other great titles. We all know that if the children do not maintain their home language, they risk losing the ability to communicate well in their first language.
I don't want students just to practice speaking their home language to remain bilingual, I want to push my students to be bi-literate, to read and write in two languages.
If students are bi-literate imagine the doors this can open in their futures. Please help bring books into my children's library that can help them grow in Spanish and English. Thank you in advance for your support!
