Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Which is better? English or Spanish? Why not both? In my senior year of high school, I resolved to learn Spanish. I was motivated by a part-time job at a restaurant where most employees spoke Spanish and I felt left out. Bilingualism has enriched my life and I'd like the same for my students!

I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!

They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development. Although the majority of children come from Spanish-speaking households, they have fallen into the Spanglish habit that the media portrays as trendy and cool. While acceptable in social settings, it's not the strong language base my students must have to achieve academic success now and in the future.

My Project

My 4-year-old's learn through touching, manipulating, and experiencing. The Spanish and English Teaching Tubs will provide a collection of objects for every letter/sound of the alphabet in both languages. The tubs can be used for a variety of activities: introducing a letter/sound, sorting by letters/sounds, vocabulary development, etc. The set of bilingual color books will facilitate the acquisition of color vocabulary in English and Spanish. One result of the plethora of 'early learning' television is that the majority of my Spanish-speaking students know the colors in English, but not Spanish. While code-switching is an aspect of bilingual language development, they need to learn the colors in Spanish, as well. The ten bilingual concept books include topics of numbers, animals, opposites, and food in both languages. It's the perfect Spanish-English reference library for Pre-Kindergarten! The English word bank flip books will complement the Spanish set we already enjoy.

"The regular, high-level use of more than one language may actually improve early brain development." (Schwartz, Casey.

"Why It's Smart to Be Bilingual." Newsweek. 7 Aug. 2011). Over the past twenty-five years, I've experienced the benefits of bilingualism. I was hired by LAUSD because I was bilingual. Many of my students have enhanced communication skills & academic advantages because they are bilingual. Let's keep it going!
