Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an elementary school that services students from TK to 5th grade. We are located in the middle of a diverse and dense urban community. My 3rd and 4th graders are enrolled in a Spanish Bilingual Program that maintains and enhances their native language while supporting their growth in the English language. We have a 50/50 model in which half of the day is taught in English and the other half in Spanish.

Our school is located in the heart of Los Angeles a few miles form downtown LA where bilingualism is embraced and supported.

We are a Title One school that serves low income families from different cultural backgrounds.

My Project

Our students today can get information in seconds and can get any questions "answered" by using a simple search engine. The sources aren't always legitimate or real for that matter. Although the use of technology is definitely an asset we have the responsibility to teach our students how to find answers and how to conduct research in a comprehensive way. Teaching students how to fact check is an important skill as they also need to learn to site their sources when supporting any given topic.

Rich non fiction text is an important form of media literacy that aides the learning of scientific, biographical, geographical, cultural and social topics.

Authors of non fiction text sight their research and our students need to learn to do the same. The titles we are requesting will support our students in learning new concepts by the means of literature and text. These resources will also provide students the opportunities to study the characteristics of non fiction text like tables of contents, glossaries, indexes, diagrams, etc. Features that students themselves should include in their writing.

Furthermore this selection of media literacy will support our bilingual students in our Reading Workshop model. Through the workshop model we teach students how to site their text and show evidence when negotiating theories and conclusions of their text. This model also helps to show students the responsibility of supporting their work with evidence, comprehension skills needed for higher education and so forth. Siting evidence is a skill that will also make students' arguments stronger and bullet proof against hearsay and fake news sources.
