I am a second year teacher with a second grade bilingual special education class. We are in a high-need community school located in the Bronx, NY and would greatly appreciate your help.

The children in my class have different levels of language skills in English and Spanish. Some of them just entered this country a few months ago. Others were born here and are first generation Americans but were raised speaking Spanish only and picked up some English from television and interactions with other children. These fall between both ends of the spectrum (fluent Spanish - conversational English), but mostly they know some conversational Spanish and a little English.
Although I know that the main focus now is to teach bilingual children English as quickly as possible, studies have shown that children need a foundation in their native language in order to take in a second language.
This is why I am requesting bilingual materials. I would like to give the children the base that they need so that they can move forward with more confidence and be able to really excel in English.
I am requesting materials such as Spanish word journals, emergent readers, and a classroom Spanish/English labeling system for this purpose. I would use the labeling system to label everything in the classroom in both languages. The emergent readers and word journals would be used to teach the children how to read in Spanish.
