I have twenty eight first graders who love to read in English and Spanish. In our school, fifty percent of the students receive free or reduced-price meals. My students have very diverse backgrounds and come together to form a wonderful community.
My first graders enjoy participating in literacy activities and they are eager writers and readers.
They love creating stories in both languages and learning new math concepts. They are eager scientists and they are always interested in learning and sharing their cultures.
My Project
Our classroom library is a bridge between school and home.
I want my students to be able to share books in both languages with their families.
You can help me make this a reality by helping me build our Spanish library.
My first graders will learn to read and write in two languages. It is important that they have enough books that are at their level so they can grow as readers. Every week, each student takes books home so they can read them with their families. I would like them to be able to take reading books in both English and Spanish. Unfortunately, we don't have enough books in Spanish for them to do this.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
