Bilingual Books=Success for All!

My students need non-fiction bilingual books in order to read with their parents who only speak Spanish. Their parents can then ask them questions about the book. These non-fiction books would be great!

My Students

Our ESL students are enthusiastic and love to be at school everyday! Many of my students even attended one or two sessions of summer school. Our school has economically disadvantaged students who cannot afford basic necessities let alone high priced gadgets and toys to help with their learning. While other school systems are able to provide these tools to students in every facet of their school life, budget constraints make it difficult for our school system to provide needed tools to our student body.

We have had hits to our economy the past few years with major closings of textile plants and huge lay-offs from the local truck manufacturing plant.

This makes it very important for me to bring the world of STEM into our classrooms. My students are English as a Second Language students, which means their first language is something other than English.

Most of them speak Spanish at home, and some of their parents only know how to read in Spanish. When parents come to me asking how they can help their children in reading, they are discouraged because they can't read the English books that are sent home with their kids to help them.

My Project

This project will make a difference in the lives of my students. One of the most critical skills students learn in the first few years of school is book and print awareness. Learning how to open a book, follow along with the words, and identify words is part of that. The best way to build these skills is for children to read at home with their parents.

Having Spanish texts available at home means that Spanish-speaking parents can read with their children.

Students in my community do not have many books in their homes. They rely on the schools and their teachers to provide these books for them. The students will take the books home and read with their parents, this way they can both comprehend the story. The parents can then ask the child questions in their native language. They will then return them so that other students can enjoy the books.
