This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a bilingual third-grade teacher at an Equity Focus School, I believe literacy should be a bridge between the classroom and the community. This student-led service project empowers my students to become bilingual storytellers—using their voices, creativity, and culture to support literacy in both our school and our surrounding neighborhood.

Our students will write, illustrate, and record original bilingual stories in English and Spanish that reflect their lives and the community they come from.

These stories will be turned into both physical books and digital read-alouds. The goal is to share these student-created resources not only with younger grades in our school, but also with local libraries, community centers, and family engagement events—bringing literacy support beyond our classroom walls.

We want to reach families who speak Spanish at home and may not always have access to dual-language materials. Many parents and caregivers want to support their children’s reading but don’t always feel confident doing so in English. By creating bilingual books and recordings, our students are making literacy more accessible—and celebrating language and culture at the same time.

An iPad is essential to this effort. It will be used to write and illustrate books, record read-alouds, create digital presentations, and share our stories with the broader community. This technology allows students to take ownership of their work and develop real-world skills like collaboration, publishing, and digital communication.

This project supports the "Boost Literacy" goal of the Allstate Foundation’s Service Stars initiative. With your help, our third graders will grow as readers, writers, and community leaders—using their bilingual voices to make literacy more inclusive and inspiring for everyone.
