This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine uprooting your entire life and being transplanted to a completely foreign country. You walk into a classroom, you may not have ever had any formal education before, and you see an unknown alphabet strewn across hard walls that are trying their best to appear as inviting as possible despite the peeling paint. You have never written or read and you have a smiling teacher talking to you in a language you don't understand. These are the students I teach every day.
I work in a large school, in an even larger school district, with a very high immigrant population in South Central, L.A.
Many of my students have limited schooling in their own language and are now thrust into a formal school setting in a brand new and intimidating country. We move from learning letters to reading very quickly. I help students learn English while teaching them the 5th grade curriculum they desperately need to become successful and move forward in their educational careers. My students have come from all around the world, from many different and often difficult situations. They hold the American Dream, but with extremely limited resources, they need the tools to achieve it.
My Project
I am so fortunate to have a group of students who absolutely love to read. My readers are currently obsessed with the Dork Diaries, Dog Man, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid series; they are the only things keeping my students' love of reading alight. I was fortunate enough to have a previous project funded where we were able to get the beginning sets of each of these series brought to our classroom library and now my students are at the point where they have read through all of the books we received. My students are desperate to get their hands on the next books in their beloved series.
