My students need a rug to be used daily for activities were we can gather and meet as a class.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My young students live in a small community in a high poverty area which, due to the proximity to Mexico, allows them to maintain a connection with their roots and family members.
They all participate in the free lunch program and are English language learners.
They face many challenges such as poverty, lack of motivation and language barriers amongst other things.
Many families in this community struggle financially. Some parents cannot provide their children with the basic school supplies. This makes my students more appreciative of the materials we receive.
My Project
My students collaborate on class projects and daily work during which they have a creative discourse. Traditionally students work at desks or tables. I let my students choose to work wherever they would like. Many prefer working on the floor where they can spread out. Currently that entails using plastic mats or an old rug that was passed down to us from a previous class. A new rug will encourage my students to work together in small groups to share ideas, and work towards more common goals.
A rug will also help my students with behavioral challenges because often they cannot sit for long periods of time.
Sitting or lying on a rug allows them to move around, yet still continue to participate in class activities.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
