My Students

It is tough being a kid, and no one knows that more than Junie B Jones, the precocious first grader at the heart of the books I am requesting.

For some of my students, it can be especially hard to be a kid!

My class hails from SW Denver and the kids come from economically challenged, linguistically diverse homes, where life isn't always so easy. Our school is more than 90% free and reduced lunch, and kids really do most of their reading here in our classrooms, mostly because they do not have access to books anywhere else.

My Project

I read aloud a Junie B Jones book to my students during Halloween, and the class was mesmerized: here was a kid they could relate to! A kid with disastrous grammar, who makes terrible decisions in school and at home, but learns from them every time in a very funny, but very sincere way. Ever since, we have been checking these books out from the library whenever they are available. Recently, some of my students have been trying to read the Junie B Jones books during free reading time, and the other kids just gather around and listen- they really cannot get enough Junie B!

I am requesting the full set of Junie B Jones books #1-27 for my classroom library, as well as some pillows to help beautify and cozy up our library space.

I want my students to have unlimited access to the books they love, and want to encourage them to dive into a series with a character they love and relate to. Getting kids hooked on books at such a young age is priceless, and your contribution to this project will make that a reality for my own class of precocious first graders!
