This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Wow! Where did you get that gigantic book?" This is what I typically hear when I first introduce students to a big book. It's as if they are imagining a magical book store full of big books. No matter the content of the book, students are thrilled to read along and look at the extra large pictures.

I have not yet met my new students, but I will have a class of about 30 students who will all hopefully be voracious readers by the end of the year.

Our Illinois school is Title I, with 59% of students coming from low income families, and 23% being English Language Learners. At the beginning of each year, I receive students with widely varying school experiences. While some students have attended preschool for 2-3 years, others have had no schooling at all. It is my job to reach students of all backgrounds and push them to the academic and social-emotional heights they are all capable of!

My Project

At the beginning of the year, shared reading is an essential part of my daily reading curriculum. This is a time when students and I read enlarged stories and poems together. My students need big books such as Feathers For Lunch, Mouse Paint, and From Head to Toe to fit their needs as emergent readers. Students of all levels can be involved in pointing to words, identifying letters and sight words, decoding new words, predicting words based on patterns and repetition, and using sticky notes to label illustrations. Shared reading is an especially meaningful way to involve English Language Learners. The enlarged print in big books helps students understand the connection between oral and written language. I specifically chose big books for this project that suit the needs of my students. The big books in my current collection have very small print and often contain too many words on each page. The books I have chosen look more like the books students read on their own every day during our reading workshop: they have about one sentence per page and follow a predictable pattern.

Experiencing these big books during shared reading will help more of my students find success as readers.

Once students understand one-to-one word correspondence and are able to follow a predictable pattern, they are ready to read books of higher and higher levels of difficulty. They also gain confidence and look forward to reading every day! Thank you for contributing to my students' success as readers!
