Big Books for Little Readers!

My students need Big Books in order to develop early literacy behaviors, oral language, rhyme and repetition and the joy of reading!

My Students

"Tell me and I'll forget. Show me and I may remember. Involve me and I learn." (Benjamin Franklin). Using Big Books will help my students become involved in the reading experience so that early on they see themselves as readers and develop a love of reading that will hopefully last a life time!

Our school is an At-Risk population with a 91% free and reduced lunch status.

Many of our Kindergarten students come to school not having had any experience with books including not having books read to them. Oral language is often delayed which also impedes reading development. Many of the children do not have books in their homes so experiences at school with books is essential to develop concepts learned through books as well as the joy reading can bring.

My Project

A 2011 study done by the Annie E. Casey Foundation found that students who don't read proficiently by 3rd grade are four times more likely to leave school without a diploma and that number rises when the children come from poverty. Using Big Books will help children: develop concepts about books such as directionality, words vs. letters, where to start reading and punctuation; identify rhyming words; recognize letter names and sounds; develop 1:1 matching; predict and check to see if they are correct; and finally develop a joy for reading and seeing themselves as readers - skills necessary to develop reading proficiency. Big Books provide an opportunity for whole class as well as small group and individual instruction.

It is my hope that the inclusion of these Big Books into our class will start my students off on a path of reading development that they will be able to build on and help them grow into proficient, independent readers.

Due to circumstances only, many of my students come in already behind in language and reading development. I want each of them to leave me with not only the skills necessary for beginning reading, but to see themselves as readers and know that anything is possible for them!
