Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach kindergarten at an elementary school with a high percentage of English language learners. Eighty-five percent come from economically disadvantaged households.
Many of my students are attending school for the very first time.
This puts them at a disadvantage compared to students with pre-academic skills. Despite their hardships, even my most challenging students come to school excited to learn. They take to heart my teachings and leave the classroom more socially, emotionally, and academically ready for the year ahead.
When I asked my students what they learned during the year, several said they learned how to respect others and resolve conflict in our classroom. Similarly, the culture at our school is characterized by respect.
My Project
For the past two years I have been using Benchmark Advance's lap-size decodable readers for direct and guided practice during whole group instruction. My students love interacting with these readers. They practice directionality and one-to-one correspondence with the pointer and apply word attack skills by placing highlighter tape on letters, word chunks, and more!
Big books help our youngest learners become more attuned to all features of a book.
I would love to expand our big book library to provide students more opportunities to develop their reading skills. These particular books were chosen because of their engaging storylines. When interest is high, students are more eager to learn. It is my hope that my students will anchor their learning to the books we read and continue to apply those skills to other books.
More than half of students from low‑income households
