This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are becoming big readers! The last half of kindergarten is a time of amazing growth. Students who began the year not knowing the sounds or even the names of letters can suddenly read!

My diverse group of students attend school at a Title 1 school, where more than half of the students get free or reduced-price lunch and many of them speak a language other than English at home.

My kindergarten students are an enthusiastic bunch! They worked hard for the first half of the year, learning the sounds of the letters and how to combine those sounds to make words and now they are reading! It is so exciting for students when they can look at a book and see words that they already know how to read.

My Project

The problem is, it is hard to see the words in books when we use little books for reading aloud. It is much easier to see the words in books when we use big books. The big books that I have requested are interesting and engaging and they have bright, bold pictures and large words that students can see easily. They also address concepts that students must learn as part of our California state standards, such as tracking print, retelling familiar stories, and learning to appreciate differences in others. I have also requested a big book easel with storage slots in the back to hold our books. This easel will make it easier for me to handle the big book while I'm reading it to my students. It will also give us a safe place to store our books. Learning to take care of our things is an important concept students need to learn, so it will be wonderful to get these books and a good place to store them too, so students can start practicing taking care of them the minute we get the books.

Most of us don't remember the exact moment when we learned to read.
