My students need 10 various big books that they can read and listen to. They also need a class set of 10 blank big books to create our own "BIG" stories!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach wonderful little Pre-K children in a high need community. The children absolutely love to hear and "read" many stories a day. Their favorite part of storytime is when I read big books.
Unfortunately many of my big books are very old and falling apart. Many of the big books I have been supplied with throughout the years are boring and have no connection to our curriculum. I do not have big book versions of books I often use such as social studies, science, and favorite read-alouds. When I read my little books to the children, they often complain of not being able to see and when they read them independently, they often argue over the books since it's not large enough for children to share.
Our class desperately needs new big books. Big Books are important because they allow all children to see the pictures clearly. They also allow them to see the print and learn reading strategies that I model for them such as pointing to the words and using picture clues to figure out unknown words. Shared reading with big books is so important because it helps children learn how to read and learn to love reading! They will also be so excited when they are able to read their favorite stories together because it's big enough to share with a few reading buddies!
My class also needs a class set of blank big books so the children can be proud authors of our very own class big books!
