My Students
Save the arts! Do you remember the first time you worked with a new, exciting technology? Most of my students come to my class able to draw amazing things with a #2 pencil, and little experience with other materials. Help me introduce them to the colorful world of Media Arts.
I teach at an urban, arts magnet high school serving a high poverty population.
Students spend two periods a day in art class. The arts motivate our students to come to school every day, and as a result, we have the best attendance and graduation rate in the district. (We have a 92% graduation rate compared to a district average of 45%.)
My Project
My Media Arts students need tools to express their big ideas. We currently share four camcorders among classes of 20+ students, which means students often get tired of waiting for camcorders and film their projects on their cell phones. Since higher-quality equipment directly translates to more professional projects, additional camcorders would allow more students to gain experience with college-level equipment and software and to create the portfolio-worthy work needed to apply to college film and journalism programs.
My diverse student body is committed to sharing their unique perspectives with the school and local community.
Our school's location in the heart of the city provides students with easy access to a plethora of stories, and our daily video announcement show provides a platform for student voices. Help us share our stories!
