Beyond the Office: Elevating the Counseling Space for Students

Help me give my students materials and snacks to elevate their safe space (my counseling office) and provide them with a welcoming, calming environment.

My Project

As a high school social worker, I have the privilege of supporting students who come from underserved, minority backgrounds and lower economic statuses. These students face challenges such as financial instability, limited resources, trauma, and societal pressures. Despite these obstacles, they demonstrate remarkable resilience and strength every day. Their ability to persevere inspires me, and I am dedicated to providing them with a safe, nurturing environment where they feel understood and supported as they work toward their full potential.

The materials I am requesting—such as an ocean sound calming drum, fidget toys, snacks, a tabletop punching bag, pipe cleaners, weighted stuffed animals, and therapy books—will create a space that helps my students feel safe and calm.

Many of these students experience stress, anxiety, or trauma, and access to these calming tools will make a significant difference. The calming drum and ocean sounds will provide a peaceful atmosphere, while fidget toys and pipe cleaners give them an outlet for nervous energy. Snacks help meet basic needs and improve concentration, and weighted stuffed animals offer comfort. These tools not only serve as distractions but also equip my students with resources to manage their emotions and focus on their growth.

The heart of my work is creating an environment where students feel supported. Many come to school carrying more than just academic stress—they carry the weight of their circumstances. Providing these sensory tools signals that their well-being matters, helping them regulate emotions and reduce anxiety. I want my students to know they can trust me and feel safe in the classroom. By ensuring their mental and emotional health is prioritized, I can help them overcome their challenges and succeed both academically and personally.
