My Students
For too long, the world of science fiction and dystopian writing has belonged to the boys. Fortunately, dystopian novels featuring dynamic female characters and often written by female writers are emerging on bookshelves across the world.
My students attend a charter school in Colorado.
They love to read, but unfortunately, our school library's minuscule budget doesn't afford many opportunities for putting up-to-date fiction on the shelves. Lately, my students have been eating up dystopian fiction...but they are eager for more!
My Project
In particular, my female students are interested in reading science fiction and dystopian writing. The Hunger Games has inspired them to read more and more, but we just don't have enough titles to satisfy their reading appetites. I am hoping to create a library of dystopian titles with strong female characters that inspire my girls to become determined, independent thinkers.
Our girls are growing up in a world that convinces them they need make-up, hair straighteners, and nail salons to make friends and find romance.
I have been so thrilled with the dystopian fiction with strong female characters that has emerged over the last five years and hope that these characters will inspire my students in the same way they inspired me.
