Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At PCTA, our diverse student population is comprised of 90% students of color. Angie Thomas’s The Hate U Give is not only culturally relevant for our students, but will give them an outlet in these divisive times. Currently, our district is focused on allocating funds to fill the technology gap which causing limited funds for print books. Also, a survey conducted last school year resulted in majority of our students preferring to read a printed book rather than an electronic one. As a result, our print funds are extremely limited, but the demand for current titles is high.

As you know, reading fiction is not only a great way for students to learn, but an escape as well.

It is our hope that eventually all 700 of our students will have a chance to read this powerful piece of literature through our PCTA READS program. This program is a school wide book club for teachers and students alike. All books donated through this DonorsChoose project will put a book in the hand of a student.

My Project

Our diverse students need to have an outlet to discuss and learn to move beyond the difficult cultural and racial issues within our country currently. As an All School Read, teachers and students will be able to bring up the topics highlighted in this captivating book, grapple with the issues in their minds, and communicate their thoughts about racism and hatred in their homes, schools and communities. Starr Carter's story will allow us to open the doors of conversation and through discussion, we can face these challenges together and build a community of trust. With this book, our goal is to start a book club and continue on with other stories which our community can connect and relate to.
