This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students need to be aware that there is a world outside the five mile radius that they are exposed to. Reading age appropriate US News will not only help with reading fluency and comprehension, but also exposing them to the world outside of their living boundaries.
My classroom is located in an inner city Phoenix school district.
We are a diversified school with 98% of our students qualifying for free and reduced lunch and 100% of our students receiving free breakfast daily. My students are wonderful and eager to learn.
My Project
Each month students will be able to utilize the Scholastic News magazines to help with reading comprehension and fluency. Students' can take an individual article that they are interested in and increase their subject knowledge by doing further research and presenting it to the class.
These magazines will not only help with reading fluency and comprehension, but also to spark students' interest to the news happening all over the United States.
Most of my students are not aware of current events which occur outside of the 5 mile radius from their homes. Improved reading skills and igniting student interest and excitement, to current events that they do not normally get exposed to, is my envision of what this resource would bring to my classroom.
