My Students
My 60 sixth grade students and I work and learn together in Baltimore City.
While my students and I sometimes feel like we are worlds apart, we quickly found commonality by trying our best to care for each other, support each other, and learn together as one community; I'm proud of them every day.
Our school is a Title 1I school, and the great majority of our teachers are rated ‘highly effective’. Even so, we are facing paralyzing budgetary concerns despite impressive PARCC scores, a limited suspension rate, and a partnership with the University of Maryland for clinical support. We have worked hard since the first day of school to become a learning community where we all respect each other's talents, differences, ability levels and personalities. Most importantly, we work to keep our classroom in mint condition.
My Project
Put short, we lack the basic (and necessary) means to succeed and learn in the classroom; for example, depending on if the school has paper determines if my students receive homework to practice the skills learned in class.
While I’ve had generous help from family and friends to get me started, I’ll need continued support to effectively teach my students.
Most of the items needed are basic teaching materials, such as pencils, hole-punch, staplers, paper, colored pencils (I use them to self-grade by color coding parts of their essays). Many students are visual learners, and having a clear audio system with so many students is essential. I have included oil pastels and art chalk so students may express themselves through art which accompanies their writing.
There is one expensive item that is unequivocally important: a document camera. Students need to see (and I need to model) what their work should look like, and, more importantly, what the expectation for success actually is. This is my true wish list, and the beauty of the majority of items is that they will last for years to come.
