Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Teachers who provide snacks to bilingual students, especially those who are new to the USA and live in food deserts, offer crucial support that goes beyond academics. These students often face unique challenges that impact their ability to learn, and something as simple as a snack can have profound benefits for their overall well-being, emotional stability, and academic success.

For students new to the country, the transition can be overwhelming, especially when faced with language barriers, cultural differences, and the stress of adapting to a new educational system.

In addition to these challenges, many bilingual students in food deserts struggle with food insecurity, making it difficult to concentrate and engage in learning. Hunger and nutritional deficiencies can lead to irritability, fatigue, and difficulty processing information, all of which hinder academic performance. By offering snacks, teachers are addressing this basic need, enabling students to focus better and participate more fully in class.

Furthermore, providing snacks fosters a sense of care and inclusion. When bilingual students receive a snack from their teacher, it sends a powerful message that they are valued and supported. This act of kindness can help ease feelings of isolation or alienation that often accompany the experience of being new to the country. It also promotes a sense of belonging, which is essential for emotional well-being. As students feel more comfortable and supported in their new environment, they are more likely to take risks in speaking and engaging in class, which is especially important for language learners.
