Beyond Beautification: Change Begins Now

Help me give my students the equipment necessary to continue our school beautification project. The laminating and die cut machines will help start an "art closet" of sorts that our students can use to make their visions reality.

My Students

We are a 90-90 - working on the last 90 school. 99% of our students are minority. 90% of our students are considered "at-risk" due to family income, home life, and their environment. However, the 90% that we are currently lacking is the 90% proficiency. Every day, we struggle as adults to break the stigma that is associated with success and achievement in our community. For many of our students, there is so much going on outside of school that outweighs what we are doing in school.

While teachers try their best to teach the curriculum, what is lacking is the attention that must be paid to the mental and emotional well-being of our students.

Students who suffer from low self-esteem, identity issues, and feelings of worthlessness or the extreme need to belong to a peer group, regardless of the costs, cannot be concerned with words inside of a textbook. In order for our students to have a vested interest in the curriculum, we as a faculty, staff, and community must first have a vested interest in them.

My Project

Currently, the physical condition of our school does not create a sense of welcoming and belonging for our students. Not feeling as if they are cared for because of this, the students lack the motivation to succeed. The students took it upon themselves to start a school beautification project because they feel that their surroundings impact their motivation to succeed.

The climate and atmosphere of the school can be changed with a few simple and artistic touches.

The students have expressed their desire to help in any way possible, even donating their time on a Saturday morning to come paint the front office and counseling area.

The counselors and teachers used their own funds to purchase paint and supplies to beautify the counseling suite and other areas in the school. Although we are a 6A school, our school library lacks butcher paper, a functional laminating machine, and many other resources that would typically be used to create bulletin boards and other improvements to the school climate and environment.

The counselors were able to find a community member to donate a table for our lobby area so that our students can complete college and scholarship applications while they are with us. The table is also used to provide resources to parents and students on a variety of topics from testing to colleges, to mental health. However, we are in need of chairs for this table.
