Our programs consists of students with various disabilities (Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disabilities, Developmental Delays, Down Syndrome and other genetic disorders) from ages 3-8. Working in an environment designed for children with disabilities can be a daily struggle but it can also be so rewarding! My students learn through different methods, process information in different ways, and express themselves through different avenues.
I don’t love them despite their disability, I love them because of it.
I love how they explore their environment, adapt to both internal and external challenges and thrive when in the right classroom. I get to see the wonder on their faces when they finally master a skill that has been challenging for them. I get to see them open up to their peers, make eye contact, and make friends; for someone on the Autism Spectrum this is often a challenge.
My Project
We know from research in the field of early childhood education, that taking a whole child, play-based approach to learning produces more well-rounded and successful students. Unfortunately, with cuts to education, vital sensory materials are being excluded from the budget making it increasingly difficult to educate the whole child. Sensory experiences are important in early childhood and elementary aged child, but perhaps more so for children with disabilities, who may process sensory information differently than typical children.
By providing a ‘sensory library’ my students will have access to tools for exploration, self-regulation, problem solving, and increased opportunities for social interactions.
We are wishing to get comfy floor seats, water beads, kinetic sand, playdoh, and floating alphabet bubbles to explore and experience. When a child has regular access to appropriate sensory input, focus increases leading to better concentration and skill building. When you are working with a child with developmental delays, it is important to be able to utilize every tool available to help bridge the gap, and a sensory library is a huge tool that is lacking in our school.
