Beulah Beat Makers: Social-emotional Learning Through Drum Circles

Help me give my students quality Remo drums to start our Beulah Beat Makers drum circle. I'm hoping to incorporate drum circles, self expression, and positivity in our classroom and begin an after-school performing arts drumming group.

My Project

I am a music teacher at an amazing school in Douglasville, GA. My school is a dual-language school (Spanish/English), and it's a place where diversity and multicultural learning is celebrated and valued! The students I teach are from many different cultural backgrounds, and they are kind, curious students who love to learn! An environment like this makes it so fulfilling to offer new ways to engage these bright, young minds! This is why I'm hoping to include drum circles in the upcoming school-year.

Drum circles are a wonderful way to build community, cooperation, and expression.

According to a study published in University of Florida's Journal of Undergraduate Research, "Participatory drum circles can lead to social resilience, emotional completeness, and mental health benefits. The literature in the field of arts in health demonstrate the specific ways a drum circle may affect wellbeing through socialization, rhythmic entrainment, and expression" (Lee, Mason, & Sonke, 2021). In a drum circle, students learn how to listen to others, create space for other musicians while offering their own unique ideas, and offer stability in the group while working with others. Many aspects of a drum circle can serve as metaphors for interpersonal relationships and used for social-emotional learning in the classroom. Additionally, drum circles skills can be adapted for different ages and abilities for use with all students.

In addition to using drum circles in the classroom, I hope to begin an after-school drum circle program called the Beulah Beat Makers. Rehearsals and performances would incorporate musical knowledge and build positivity and social-emotional skills. I believe this program would be an asset to promote community in our school and build self-esteem and social skills for all of our students. Please help us meet this goal, and begin an exciting new program for my amazing students!
