My students need 44 adventurous stories to feed their imagination through reading, including The Lord of the Rings, Touching Spirit Bear, Julie of the Wolves and Hatchet.

My Students

Active? These kids ski, hunt, fish, climb, hike and play in the woods. As avid readers, they love to immerse themselves in stories of the wild places around them. That's why I chose 44 stories centering on survival, cold winters, the Iditarod race, dogs, and the north.

My students hate just sitting still, but they love to read and to be read to.

They love stories in poetry, song or books, and I want to make sure that our classroom library is stocked with adventure stories which relate to the environment my students know and love: the wild, cold northland. Our school is a small German-immersion school in which students spend half the day learning in English and half the day learning in German, so it's essential that they develop strong reading skills in English. Literacy research shows that students learn faster when they enjoy what they read, so I am collecting exciting stories that my students will love.

My Project

My students take home books every weekend from my classroom library, and I want to make sure it is full of stories they will keep reaching for! Since our school is young and still developing, we don't have a school library; that's why it's important to me that I have plenty of grade-level and more advanced choices for my students to pick from.

I teach in a young charter school facing great challenges, and our students' success is strongly affected by the quality of our classroom environment.
