My Students

Kindergarteners think everything "should" belong to them. They do not seem to understand that money doesn't grow on trees. Making smart financial decisions is not even in their way of thinking, but it should be. That is the goal of this project.

My target students are in kindergarten and 1st grade in an Arkansas Delta school with a very high population of students who qualify for free or reduced lunch.

They are incredibly bright and eager to learn. They love working on inquiry-driven projects that require them to work together and apply twenty-first century skills. I actually teach at the middle school level, and sponsor the FBLA Chapter. If funded I will train my middle school FBLA members to take work in teams, then take this book along with the materials for the project and teach it with a partnering Kindergarten class. In a way two groups of students will be learning the same financial management skills, but at different levels of understanding.

My Project

I am requesting 8 copies of the book "Betty Bunny Wants Everything." This book chronicles a day in the life of Betty and her older sister. They have saved for a gift for grandma, but Betty soon discovers that she has a few "wants" of her own. Before they know it, they are out of money and have little to show for it. I am requesting enough duck tape & Velcro to make 8 classroom set of the wallet and red card stock paper money that is an important part of the story. The envelopes will help keep everything together. The students will learn the important concept of reading, counting money, saving, planning, opportunity cost, and money management to mention a few. All skills we wish students had a better grasp of. Not only will we mentor/student teachers learn the concepts above, but they will also work in teams to create duck-tape wallets and other materials to be used in the project. So they will be learning to work in teams, delegation and project planning from start to finish.

As a business teacher, I see such a need for my own middle level students to have a grasp of financial concepts.

However, it must start much younger than 7th grade. I hope this project will inspire the younger kids we partner with to start to think about making wise money decisions. At the very least, I hope all involved start to see that money does not grow on a tree in the back yard of mommy and daddy's house.
