This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am a Social Worker in a South Bronx middle school seeking funding for tangible rewards, that the students have chosen, for improved behavior and academics.
Several of my students have behaviors that are disruptive in class and negatively impact their relationships with peers and teachers.
Some of these behaviors include impulsiveness, inappropriate language, physical horseplay, and more.
I have set personal goals with each of these students to get 1% better each day towards their goal. We discussed steps that they need to take to achieve their goal.
Each of the students thought about what would motivate them to reach their goal. I have learned that if the student doesn't have a buy-in to the goal, they will not work towards achieving it.
For now, tangible rewards are what motivate them. Ultimately, I want these goals to become generalized to all aspects of their lives and in the future rewards will be intrinsic.
