Help me give my students large dry erase boards and supplies to support group work and collaboration in the Algebra classes at our high school. This encourages students to explain concepts and improve their math understanding.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Returning to school after covid has brought a number of challenges for students and teachers. One of the biggest is student disengagement with both the material and with each other. This grant would provide large whiteboards for five Algebra 1 classrooms at our high school to be used in class on a daily basis. Using these whiteboards would provide a more interactive experience, increasing math engagement and mastery of the material. Additionally, group interactions help build needed interpersonal and communication skills.
Our goal is to use these large whiteboards to engage our top and bottom students together.
We currently use small, individual whiteboards, which encourage participation and the number of problems students complete in class. Individual boards fall short when students do not know the information. With difficult concepts, struggling students tend to stop participating. This causes struggling learners to fall farther behind, resulting in an increased gap between those who “get math” and those who do not.
Currently, one of our Algebra 1 classes is successfully using large whiteboards such as these. They are used for group warm-ups, homework review and group problems. Even reluctant students are part of the conversations. Students understanding the material build skills and confidence by explaining to others, while building academic vocabulary and problem solving skills.
Using whiteboards as a group activity also builds social connections in an increasingly disconnected world. To be successful in a diverse world, students need to learn to work with others that they do not know. When using the group whiteboards, students have a common activity and product which encourages them to participate and interact. Positive conversations ensue and learning takes place.
Please consider funding the our high school Algebra Team’s project to provide these large whiteboards for our classrooms. Our teachers, students and community thank you.
