Better Get Your Math & Science RIGHT!

My students need (and truly deserve) a full set of classroom calculators, various math manipulatives, and some math books for our library.

My Students

My students have trouble following along as we work through extensive math problems or attempt to make real-world connections to many scientific concepts on the whiteboard at the front of the room. They try so hard to keep up, but their frustration is palpable. Hands-on materials would help!

Sixth grade is a critical year, when students are both eager to learn and trying to figure out where they fit in socially.

This is also a time when academic content begins to challenge students like never before. My students are no different. They come to school every day so eager, with boundless curiosity and a strong work ethic. Even though the resources provided by our urban school system aren't the best, my students are incredibly bright and have an enormous capacity to learn and succeed! 99% of the students in my class live under the poverty level and many do not have access to calculators at home. I wish to match my students' efforts with the best possible resources. We would be so appreciative of a quality set of basic calculators and some math literature for our small classroom library. These hands-on materials will enable my students to feel successful in math and science and help them to avoid the pitfalls of academic frustration that can lead to more serious problems later.

My Project

Student calculators and math manipulatives provide a valuable visual element to math lessons and scientific demonstrations. Not only are students better able to understand and visualize the content, but they are also empowered like never before! Armed with the best tools, students are able to take on the role of teacher-- practicing public speaking and celebrating their talents and ideas as they model their own thinking aloud while problem solving. A collaborative community of teachers and learners develops as teams work through each problem at their seats!

I teach at a school district that has a long history of failing its students through a lack of resources and inadequate instruction.

I am passionate about giving my students everything they'll need to reach their greatest potential. Please help me to honor their effort and determination.
