This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Learning to love to read is something every English teacher hopes to instill in his or her students. As an English teacher, this is one of my main goals. Yet, it is impossible to love to read when your comprehension is low. I teach 7th and 8th grade English in a low-income urban community.
Many of my students, are not exposed to reading until they start school.
They are often very behind in their reading skills and read below grade level. Therefore, it can be very difficult to get them engaged in a reading project. That is why I believe it is important to give students options with what they read and to let them pick books that they can relate to.
My Project
That is why this project will so greatly help my classroom. The larger a variety of books I have, the more students I can hope to interest in reading. If I have only books about the Civil War, many students will be turned off entirely to reading. But if I can offer the student who likes soccer a book centered around a soccer player or the student who is interested in the Holocaust a book about someone growing up in that time period, I have a real opportunity to create life-long readers. As well, the reading guides will help improve comprehension and student-text interaction.
Your help will ensure that my students have choice when it comes to reading and have guides to help them interact with their texts.
