My classroom is located in a high-need, urban area of New York. This past school year I taught 9th grade Humanities, a combination of English and Social Studies. My class is an inclusion class with an emphasis on developing skills and preparing students for college.
This coming school year, I will move up with my students to the 10th grade and continue teaching Humanities. Many of my students are low-level readers and this past year we worked on developing reading skills through independent reading three times a week. My students have developed a love of reading but we need more books. Our school does not have the funds to purchase additional classroom library books and my students need new books to keep up their interest in reading.
When we return to school in September, my students will again begin working on their reading skills, which will help them not only in our class but across the subject areas and as they move on to college. However, the selection of books in our classroom library is limited and our students have already read many of the titles. To keep them interested and intrigued in reading, we need new books for them to read that are current, exciting, and will draw their attention.
