Our school is a Title I school located in the rural Appalachian mountains. We are a small K-8 community that feeds into one high school.
Our school is immersed in a college-going culture and career exploration every day.
The language from kindergarten to 8th grade indicates that we believe that ALL our students can go on beyond high school to achieve a post-secondary degree or certification.
Our students do not often have the opportunity to travel and meet others. They will often report that the only opportunity they have to travel outside of our area is with the school. Our students take full advantage of every opportunity given to them. They have become very adept at writing thank you notes and reflecting on their travels.
My Project
Imagine working so hard and actually placing at your state convention only to not have enough money to go the next level! Our Betas work hard all year to get ready to compete in various competitions such as Service Snapshot, Math, Science, and Rapid Response. In addition to these competitions, our Betas will have the opportunity to attend the leadership seminar where they will learn valuable leadership skills to bring back to our community and make our school a better place. In addition, they will have multiple chances to interact with students from other areas of the United States. There are several social events that I believe are just as important as the leadership seminar and the competitions. This allows our students to see the world that is outside of our quiet mountain and gives them the chance to share a piece of our culture as well.
