My Project

In the Chinese culture, caring for fish is considered a good investment because the words for "fish" and "water" are associated with "abundance" and "wealth" due to their similarities.

By maintaining aquariums, hanging up fish decorations, and playing games, Chinese people are hoping that in the New Year they will enjoy wealth and prosperity.

My aquatic studies students care for marine aquarium systems in our classroom. We will soon be adding fish to more of our coral reef tanks and need automatic fish feeders to keep them fed during weekends and school vacations, when no one is in the classroom every day. To celebrate Lunar New Year, these students will play the traditional Chinese, Vietnamese, and Cambodian dice game called Fish-Prawn-Crab. It is a fun, fast-paced game that relies on luck, not knowledge. It is played in medium to large groups, so I am requesting four sets for a class of students to play. For a treat at the end, students will enjoy chewy rice candy that is wrapped in edible dissolving glutinous rice paper. The red and gold paper will be used in Lunar New Year crafts such as folding fish and sea creature decorations, Chinese zodiac animals including the dragon, and lanterns.

During our celebration times I will have out our books about various Lunar New Year traditions, legends, and arts and crafts. These students will start their new semester-long aquatic studies class in January, so these activities will serve as excellent ice breakers and teambuilding opportunities before the actual Lunar New Year in February.
