I am a fourth grade teacher at Garrison Elementary School in Washington, DC. With a population of less than 300 students, most students come from low income families receiving free or reduced priced breakfast and lunch.
Recent studies suggest that differentiated instruction (small group instruction) is most effective in teaching students with various abilities. Each ability level would receive personalized instruction, therefore, allowing me to teach to the students' needs rather than teaching to the middle. This setting would also give me an opportunity to assess my students and provide them with immediate feedback.
Having a kidney table is the perfect student teacher work station. There is a groove built in the table to easily access the students. More importantly, students love having their personal time with the teacher and this table is ideal for small group reading and writing instruction.
