Please help sixth grade students prepare summer activity packets for first graders. Many do not have access to educational products in their homes as the families struggle financially. It will reinforce that learning is important and that taking responsibility for someone else can be rewarding. Three of my sixth grade students are mentoring first graders who needed "buddy" support. One six year with behavior issues was matched with a model twelve child. It has changed her immensely because now she wants to be just like her Best Buddy. A child who never smiled was matched with a jovial student. Now, you see her smile all the way down the hall. A third child with developmental delays is striving to achieve because his Best Buddy checks on him. (Plans are already in the making to expand Best Buddies to both first grade classes next year, as well as involve more sixth graders as mentors.) These three sixth graders and I would like to prepare a small backpack full of books, paper, pencils and art supplies for each first grader to take home this summer. Essentially, it will be gift from one child to another in hope of helping a youngster become more successful both academically and socially.
