This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My first graders are English language learners that have a thirst for learning. Our school is in a low income, urban neighborhood in Chicago. Ninety eight percent of our school students are native Spanish speakers and come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. In some cases, school is the only place where these students get the opportunity to hear and use the English language.
My students are highly motivated and eager to learn!
The Chicago Public Schools have been facing budget cuts year after year, and I am lacking the materials needed to help these kids.
My Project
Our classroom is a new first grade classroom this year. I have set up our classroom library with extra books I found around the school. The classroom library is lacking great mentor texts that I could use to teach my students the necessary skills they will need to become efficient readers.
I would love to use these fun books to teach our poetry unit, prediction, inferencing, character traits, asking and answering questions, and many more comprehension strategies.
These books will be used for read alouds in our literacy block. They are engaging and fun and will help my students to become better readers.
